C. 28782 FRIDAY, JANUARY 4, 1980 Price 10c Per Copy Weather Wednesday: high 54, low 35. Thursday was sunny, but according to the weather reports it was supposed to either rain or snow Thursday night. Lt. Col. John A. “Shorty” Powers, the “voice of the astronauts” in the 1960s was found dead Tuesday at his home in Phoenix, Ariz. Iran claims a plot against the life of visiting U. N. Secretary- General Kurt Waldheim was discovered and thwarted Wed nesday. News reports Thursday morn ing stated that the price of gold had gone over $600 an ounce. Alabama was voted college football's national champions for the second year in a row. The Crimson Tide was followed by Southern California, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Houston, Florida State, Pittsburgh, Arkansas Nebraska and Purdue. North Carolina was 15th. Tryouts for “The Chalk Garden” are tonight at 8 p.m. at the Fine Arts Center. The Green Creek Ruritan Club is sponsoring a Variety Auction at 7:30 tonight at the Green Creek School. They are also having a pancake supper from 6 p.m. Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Continued On Back Page Couple Robbed; Man Arrested Jabe and Pearl Lawter of Rt. 1, Columbus were robbed of about $600 and two pistols Wednesday night about 7:30. The Lawters house is located along Hwy. 108 west of Mill Spring. Polk County Sheriff Boyce Carswell said that Mr. and Mrs. Lawter reported that two black men kicked in their front door and demanded their money. Mr. Lawter, who is 92. was tied with a lamp cord that the robbers cut. Mrs. Lawter, who is 79, was then forced to tell them where they kept their money. She gave them about $600 cash and the two men also took two pistols valued at about $500. They left on foot and the Lawters thought that they heard a car leave a little later. Mr. and Mrs. Lawter were taken to St. Luke’s Hospital where both were admitted. Mrs. Lawter was placed in the critical care unit and Mr. Lawter was connected to a cardiac monitor. Thursday morning they were both listed as being in satisfac tory condition at the hospital. The Polk County Sheriff’s Department spent Wednesday night and Thursday morning searching for the two men. Sheriff Carswell said that Jimmy Harris, 27, of Mill Spring was arrested Thursday at 4 a m. and has been charged with armed robbery. He is being held under $10,000 bond. Tryon Takes Two From Greer The Tryon Tigers repeated their earlier performance this season with two wins over the Greer Yellowjackets Wednesday night at the Tryon gym. The girls won 55-46 and the boys took a 53-51 win. The Tryon girls were lead by the rebounding of Becky Nesbitt who had 19 points and the floor play of Robin Simpson who had 14 points. The Tryon girls started strong and by halftime had pulled out to a 27-16 lead. By the end of the third quarter they had increased their lead to 43-26. In the 4th quarter the Greer girls began to catch up and with 47 seconds left had cut the lead to 5 points at 51-46, before the Tigers put the game away. The Tryon girls are now 7-2. In the boys game, Greer jumped out to an early 6 point lead as the Tigers found the Greer zone tough to crack. By the end of the 1st quarter Greer was in front 16-12. Just as the Tigers seemed to be catching up, they hit a cold streak and the Yellowjackets pulled out to an 8 point lead at 26-18, but by the end of the half the Tigers closed the gap to 4 at 28-24. Early in the third period the Tigers tied the score at 28-28 and then the lead see-sawed back and forth with Tryon coming out ahead 40-38 by the end of the period. Early in the 4th period the Tigers pulled out to a 6 point lead 45-39 and then had to hold on for dear life as the Continued On Back Page Priest In Charge Dr. Dudley J. Stroup The Reverend Dr. Dudley J. Stroup has been elected Priest-in- Charge of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Cross, Tryon, by the Vestry. Dr. Stroup will serve in that capacity until a new Rector has been chosen. Dr. Stroup retired to Tryon in the summer of 1978, after serving as the Rector of the Church of St. James the Less, Scarsdale, New York, for fourteen years. Prior to that, he had been Rector of Grace Church, Hinsdale, Illinois, for eleven years. He has also served parishes in New York City and Albany, New York. He began his ministry in Asheville in 1944 as Priest-in-Charge of the Church of the Redeemer and St. Luke’s Church, Chunn’s Cove. Before his retirement, he served the Episcopal Church on numerous organizations and committees, both on the local and national level.
